Welcome to my
listening comprehension page, an extension of my JLPT website.

Listening comprehension is probably the toughest part about learning a foreign language, and Japanese is no exception. One day, as I was searching for ways to
help with my Japanese listening comprehension skill, I came
across several great web based resources that are free of charge.
They've proven themselves useful to me, and so I thought
I'd share my discoveries with everyone. However, there
isn't enough room to list them all on my JLPT website so I
decided to create a new branch. Therefore, it gives me great
pleasure to introduce....
Joe's JPN listening comp
page!
First, let's start with the basics....

CHOKAI
You tube is a TREASURE TROVE of Japanese language listening resources. Literally thousands of
Japanese TV shows and commercials are available. Google bought you tube dot com for over a billion dollars, but you get to watch anything and everything available for free! WARNING: You tube is highly addictive. In fact, I might have to check into rehab myself...!

NHK Radio provides Japanese lessons on the web,
"basic" and "brush up" lessons, that are
absolutely free. Listen to the dialog and read along with the
transcript.

Listen to transcripts of Japanese anime (comics)
with Mangarama.
A fun format similiar to what Mangajin used to offer, except
Mangarama is online and it's free. Check it out!

Practice your Japanese listening comprehension with
an online learning utility called "Lesson/J".

Japanese news
NHK's radio news broadcasts for shortware radio
is available on the internet, in a live or "on demand"
format. Their "oto no fuuke" (soundscapes) intermission
show is a nice bonus, being generally easy to comprehend as you
enjoy listening to various sounds around Japan. Scroll down to
the bottom of Radio NHK's website to download their beautiful
monthly computer desktop wallpaper!
NHK video news. Watch TV news broadcasts on your
computer and read the transcripts simultaneously.
The Daily Yomiuri also has TV
news broadcasts online, available "on demand."
Yahoo Japan offers Japanese TV news broadcasts from
several news sources.

Music is one way that can help you with listening comprehension,
but it's probably more enjoyable than educational. Visit
these J-pop links, and you be the judge!
It's hard core! It's J-pop! It's hardcorej.com! This
is my favorite J-pop station. The ultimate website
and online radio station for all of your J-pop needs. Tune in to
the hardcore J top 40 countdown show, Saturdays 7-11 PM &
Sundays 7-11 AM (Pacific Standard Time). If you like pop music
from Japan, you'll love this website right down to the core.
Hardcore J rocks!
"Sing Japanese" by Peter Tse uses a fun method for
learning the language and expanding your listening comprehension
by using eleven well known Japanese pop songs from yesteryear.
Lyrics, vocabulary, and translation of the songs are included in
the book. Imagine everyone's surprise when they see and hear
you singing a Japanese song at the karaoke bar (but watch out for
Simon Cowell!)
This book is out of print, so you'll probably have a tough
time locating an original accompanying casette tape. An awesome
book, if you can find it.
Listen to all of the latest pop music from Japan with "Radio@AOL."
This is available to EVERYONE, even non-subscribers of AOL, and it's always free.
Visit the website, click the "AOL radio" tab, and then select "Launch AOL Radio with XM."

Still looking for more ways to practice your Japanese listening
comprehension? Then a visit to radiotower.com is a must. Their
list of online Japanese radio stations offer a variety of genres
such as rock, urban/rap, talk, news, and more. I recommend
listening to TBS J-Radio.
